He and his family moved to Gatesville in June of 1995 upon purchasing the clinic formerly known as Bar L Veterinary Clinic from Dr. "Snub" Liles. The clinic name was then changed to Bar N which was the family brand. "We wanted to move back to this part of Texas and were looking for a practice located in a smaller community to finish raising our kids in. We came into town on West Hwy. 84 and when we saw the view of the Courthouse as we came over the hill, we just felt this was the place we'd been looking for." Prior to moving to Gatesville, Dr. Newman had practiced in Hobbs, NM for 10 years working alongside his older brother, Dr. Don Newman, who is also a veterinarian.

LASER SURGERY
For over a decade, our Clinic has been performing a variety of surgical procedures with a Surgical Laser instead of using the traditional scalpel blade. Procedures that we routinely perform with laser include Spay/Neuter & standard soft tissue surgeries, Declaws in cats, Tumor/Lump Removal, Ear Crop, Skin Tags, Cyst Removal, Soft Palate & Dental Surgery.
Amongst the many benefits of laser surgery include much less bleeding at the surgical site, as well as not needing any sutures, in most cases. There is significantly much less pain, and healing has been shown to be accelerated when using laser over traditional surgical techniques. It is believed that circulation is better maintained with laser surgery. The use of E collars, bandages, and wraps is also much reduced, as most pets will usually leave the surgical site alone when done with laser therapy.

Limited Orthopedics
Dr. Newman performs limited orthopedic surgery including but not limited to: fracture repair, luxating patella & cruciate ligament.
LASER THERAPY
Our clinic has offered Laser Therapy for the past 5 years. We recommend laser therapy for our arthritic patients & some have seen vast improvement for their pet...even to the point of stopping oral medications. We also use the laser therapy for wound care & each surgery performed at our clinic receives a laser therapy treatment (at no additional charge) after the surgery is performed.
The cold laser therapy is a noninvasive procedure that uses light to stimulate cells and increase blood circulation. At the correct laser wavelength, pain signals are reduced and nerve sensitivity decreases. The procedure also releases endorphins, or natural painkillers, but it is not recommended for animals that have cancer because the device can stimulate blood flow to cancer cells.
The procedure is based on the idea that light is absorbed into the cells. The process, known as photo-biotherapy, stimulates protein synthesis and cell metabolism, which improves cell health and functionality.
The therapy can take as little as eight to 10 minutes on a small dog or cat, or about a half hour for bigger dogs with more arthritic areas
MLS Laser Therapy effectively treats pain associated with:
Arthritis
Tendonitis
Wounds
Post-Surgical Swelling
Inflamed Ears
Lick Granuloma
Hip Dysplasia
Disc Disease
Lameness
Sinusitis
and much more!

These days, it seems like everything has gone digital, and your pet’s visit to the vet is no exception! Digital radiography, or “X-rays” are becoming more and more mainstream in veterinary medicine, and here is why:
1) They are fast and efficient. With traditional X-rays, an exposure was made and then an actual piece of film was processed with a series of chemicals in order to view the picture. This process was messy and took time. Sometimes the whole process was taken just to find out that the animal’s positioning was suboptimal or the exposure settings inappropriate. With digital films the image literally pops up on a screen near the machine within seconds of taking the X-ray. Minor adjustments can be made with minimal effort, causing much less stress to your pet and our staff.
2) Should your Veterinarian suggest your pet be seen by a specialist (or even if you wish to have a second opinion), digital radiographs can easily be transferred to a CD disk for you to take with you.
3) Last but not least, digital radiographs produce a much clearer, more detailed image & provide immediate feedback. This gives your veterinarian much more information to work with.

UTRASOUND
Ultrasound is a non-invasive and non-radiographic technology that allows us to actually see inside the body. Unlike x-rays, there is no radiation exposure to the patient. Ultrasound can be used for a variety of diagnostic procedures such as:
*Identify bladder stones and tumors
*Ultrasound guided cystocentesis to obtain a sterile urine sample
*Ultrasound guided aspirates of lungs
*Abdominal ultrasound for masses and disfunctional abdominal organs
*Heart valve defects and other changes in the heart
*Helps in diagnosing equine tendon issues
Ultrasound is also used to perform pregnancy checks on horses, goats, dogs and cats.
*Horses - can be checked as early as 10-14 days
*Dogs - 30 days
*Goats - 30 days
Dental Services (Small Animal)
Your pet's teeth cleaning procedure is similar to your own except during his/her procedure, it will be under anesthesia. This is required so our Technician will be able to clean each tooth, the gums and the Veterinarian can perform any extractions deemed necessary. Your pet's teeth will then be polished.
Removal of Tartar
Tartar deposits are easily formed in a dog's mouth. All it takes is a few days without tooth brushing.
Tartar, also known as calculus is primarily caused by deposits of plaque. Plaque is formed as a thin pellicle on the surface of the teeth and is a mix of bacteria, minerals from the saliva and food remains. Plaque may be removed with regular at-home teeth brushing. However, if plaque is not removed, it will turn into tartar; tartar can only be removed by a professional pet dental hygienist.
Pets that have a diet based on wet food are more exposed to tartar deposits; kibble food is beneficial for dental hygiene, as it is abrasive and can clean the plaque.
Preventing Gum and Periodontal Disease
The deposits of tartar may lead to complications such as gum disease, gingivitis or periodontal disease. Your pet may suffer from dental abscesses and lose teeth. Also, the bacteria from your pet's mouth may enter the their body and cause heart, kidney or liver problems.
A professional cleaning will prevent all these diseases, ensuring that your pet has healthy teeth.
Whiter Teeth
A professional cleaning and polishing will remove any deposits of tartar and plaque and will give your pet a white smile.
No More Bad Breath
Bad breath may be caused by the deposits of tartar and bacteria. A thorough cleaning of your pet's teeth will eliminate bad breath. However, if the halitosis is caused by other internal diseases, a dental cleaning will not solve the problem.
Early Detection of Dental Problems
A professional cleaning is performed by a trained Veterinarian or Technician who will inspect the teeth, gums and mouth of your pet. Tooth decay, abscesses or any other dental problem may not be evident for an untrained eye but your Veterinarian may detect these, even if they are at an initial phase, preventing pain and other complications.
Many diseases show early symptoms in the mouth of your pet, so these diseases may be detected in the incipient phases and your pet may receive treatment.
NOTE: February is National Pet Dental Month! Our clinic offers a 20% discount every year off your pet's dental cleaning during the month. (Teeth extractions, medications, dental treats, etc. not included)
Digital Dental X-rays
The Benefits of Digital Dental X-rays for Pets
When your dog or cat has periodontal disease, much of the damage takes place below the gum line where neither you, nor your veterinarian at Bar N Veterinary Clinic can see it. For this reason we use digital dental x-rays to determine your pet’s oral health. Digital x-rays are safer for your pet and allow our staff to see the bones, roots and internal anatomy of the teeth.
What to Expect When Your Pet Needs Dental X-Rays
Dental x-rays are taken in conjunction with a full oral exam and cleaning. General anesthesia is required to provide the complete assessment of your pet’s mouth, including teeth and bone structure.
Why Digital Dental X-Rays Are Superior
The risk of radiation exposure for your pet is significantly lower with digital x-rays than traditional x-ray equipment. It fact, exposure is nearly non- existent. Digital dental x-rays make it possible to see below the surface of your pet’s gum line to fully evaluate each tooth. This technology enables the veterinarian to see results immediately and project them onto a computer screen to review. At this point, we are able to assess and develop a treatment plan.
